I wasn’t born in Grenada. My mother had that privilege, but I feel quite linked to the people and places, even more so now that I’ve started doing genealogical research.
This blog is an attempt to share what I’ve found and hopefully make even more connections. My research so far, has focused on St. George’s Parish and in particular, St. Paul’s District within it, where my family settled. I also look at St. David’s Parish, close to the St. Paul’s/St. George’s line.
Please do contact me through this blog, if something here rings a bell.
Thanks for linking to my pages. I am trying to locate and communicate with Sancho and Campbell of Grenada. I believe there is some Sancho connection to ancestry of Francisco Slinger (the mighty Sparrow). After all he choose to name one of his sons Sancho. Therefore if you have information relative to the fishing village where Sparrow was born please enlighten me. I would love to communicate with family historians of kinships of Grenada. Billy is another family who migrated to Golden Grove and Nabaclis on the East Sea Coast of Demerara, in the colony of British Guiana.
Regarding Campbell. I am in pursuit of the relatives of Reverend John Allan Campbell. He was birthed in St. George’s Grenada. His father was a schoolmaster of a Grammar School in the capital.
Again thanks a million…
Hi Osanku,
Rev. John Allen Campbell is my great grandfather.
I was really excited when I found your Wesleyan missionary notes picture of him.
My mother found that (Rev) J.A.campbell was at Edinburgh University 1864-1865.
His first childs dates are 1847-1965.
His second sons dates are 1884-1919. He was born in providence Christchurch, Barbados,
the third child, a daughter, was born at the Wesleyan Mission house, San Fernando, Trinidad and my grandmothers dates are 1889-1975. I am not sure where she was born.
I am also looking for the ancestors of Rev. John Allen Campbell and have also been told that John Allen senior was a master at the Grenada boy’s college in St Georges.
I went to the archives office in St Georges but was not allowed to look at information as it was not to be handled.
I am now in London at the National Archives looking through old newspapers. I haven’t found any information that tells me that the J.A. campbell is the one I am looking for.
There is a J campbell who taught at St Marks Parish Parochial School 1850 in Berbice, Guyana. This man may be the Rev’s father.
.
My Dad said that his wife, Eliza (or Henrietta) nee Mc Barnett was also a teacher. They may have worked in the same schools.
I would really appreciate any information that you have or any other person you can put me onto who is following these Campbells.
My Dad told me that Rev’s great, great grandfather Alexander Campbell, married a Carib woman (probably a black carib) in St Vincent. An uncle said she was from the Careenage in Grenada.
Hope to hear from You.
Vivian
Hi Vivian,
Did you ever get some information about your Alexander Campbell who married a carib woman. I wondered if that may have been my great grandmother Mary Lourdes campbell nee Alexander.
Greetings,
Pamela
Hi Pamela,
I have only just seen your letter to me written in Nov. 09.
I am still hunting for the connection between a few generations of Campbells. The Alexander Campbell I’ m searching for was executed during the Fedon Rebellion, (1795).
Alexander had a brother called James who took orphaned children to America during the rebellion. One was a Muir Campbell that someone was looking for awhile back.
Could Mary Lourdes Alexander be a relative?
Hope to hear from you,
Viv Armstrong
I would be interested on what you find regarding the name Campbell.
My great grandmother Louisa Alexander (grenadian, probably carib) was married to an Eddie Campbell and had one daughter She had 2 sisters (Margeret and Annie ). I think Margeret married a person of surname George and Annie married a Glean.
Mary Lourdes Campbell (my grandmother) went on to have 13 children with the surname Fraser. Although the youngest child (my mother) was not really a Fraser but a Thomas (Mildred, born 1940).
I am also interested in the surname ‘De Coteau” which is my father’s (Laurie, born 1930). He has passed away now. I believe his father’s name was Philip or Neary.
Please help if you can.
Greetings,
Pamela De Coteau.

Dear Sir
I have come to the end of my attempts to trace my Roots, A man named John Hugh Mowatt or Mouat joined the British Army in 1812 bn Grenada. He is described in his Army Docs which I have a copy as Tawny Skinned. His mother may have been a slave. In Jamaica one of the Slave owners was John Mowatt who had over 100 slaves. I can not find a link. He gave his fathers name as John a Planter, when enlisting in the 5th Dragoon Guards as a musician at Canterbury, Kent in 1812. He served in Spain and France and later Ireland and he became a Chelsea Pensioner OUT. He later became the Stationmaster at Woodlesford Station, Leeds where he died in 1855.

Hi,
I am interested in tracing my Father’s side of my family. He was born in Grenada, surname Fletcher, Eric. Brothers Edward. George and Vernon all moved to Trinidad, where I was born. Any information at all is welcomed. Thanks.

Steele Family
I am researching the Steele family in Grenada. My grandfather was born in 1919 in Grenada. His name was Roy Emmanuel(lle) Steele. He came to the UK where he settled and had a daughter. It is thought that his mother may not have had the Steele surname and later had 3 other children, these may have been half siblings their name’s were Roslyn, Audrey and their was a brother whose name we do not know.
Basically, I am looking for advise on how to gain more information to enable me to research my family history. We do not have my grandfathers mothers name and were therefore unable to get hold of a copy of his birth records when we visited Grenada, and we do not know which district he was born in.
I am completely stuck.. any pointers would be very much apprciated
